3rd Quarter

I’ve really been trying not to go too many days in a row without posting– I try not to go over 3.  Sometimes I am successful and other times . . .  not so much.  It doesn’t help that I am only teaching 2 times a week and the outfits that I wear the other 5 days of the week aren’t always that interesting.  But, this is a non-outfit post, anyway, so that doesn’t really matter.  I thought that I would post a 2017 New Year’s Resolution check-in.  October is the 10th month of the year so if you have goals that you wanted to achieve by the end of the year you’ve got a little less than 3 months to do it.

Honestly, I haven’t posted one of these types of posts in a long, long time.  About 7 months to be honest.  You know how I know that?  Because when I found out that I was pregnant everything in my life changed– and I know that that trend is only going to continue.

Health and Well-Being

  • 137 lbs. by May 1/ Re-Commit to 3 Workouts per week

Obviously, this goal went out the window because of the pregnancy news.  The goal did not become losing weight but rather gaining an appropriate amount of weight during each week/month/trimester.  Based on where I started, my overall goal is 30 lbs.  Currently, I am 27 weeks pregnant and have gained about 25.  It’s looking like I’m going to go over my goal and probably end somewhere around 35 lbs.

  • Drink more water, 2 cups of coffee a day and 48 ounces of water

I try to drink as much water as humanly possible these days.  Luckily, early on in my pregnancy coffee didn’t appeal to me very much and I have been able to keep my caffeine consumption as the bare minimum.

  • Eat better

This one became extremely important once I found out I was expecting.  I started eating something small every 2-3 hours and really focused on lots of fruits and veggies– avocados, spinach, colored peppers, and lots of other fruits/veggies that provided essential nutrients.

  • 10,000 points on Vitality by end of year

I am doing great on this one.  I get 5 points per day if I log at least 5,000 steps.  This may seem like a drop in the bucket to some, but with my desk job and being pregnant this is something that I have to be very conscientious about otherwise it doesn’t happen.  I have 8,500 points and I know that I can reach 10,000 in the next few months.

Finances

  • Student Loans.

I’m still working on these.  I have had to scale back on the extra payments over the past few months but they are getting there.  I did eventually sign up for auto pay on one of them because they offered a .25% reduction in my interest rate.  It’s not a lot but it could be nothing.

  • Retirement savings.

Basically just letting this one ride where it’s at.  Towards the end of the year I’ll take a closer look at where I am and where I want to be and adjust accordingly.  But, for right now this one is just holding steady.

  • Savings.

Uh, same as above.  Right now I am just trying to accrue money in my savings to help me have some sort of funds available during my maternity leave Jan.-March.

Misc.

  • Sadly, I stopped reading a book a month earlier this year.  With a full-time job it just wasn’t something that I could really focus on.  And then I got pregnant and didn’t want to do anything but sleep for the first 12 weeks.

There you have it!  That’s where I stand with the goals that I made at the start of the year and the direction that I am headed for the last few months of this year.  At this point it’s just going to be all about preparing for baby and enjoying family over the holidays.

Egad!  It’s April 5th which means that I am almost a week past due on my recap for the month of March.  Having said that, I think you might have a hunch how the month panned out for me!  But, let’s get into it.  First, here’s my outfits for the month (in no particular order).

Health and Well-Being

  • 137 lbs. by April 1/ Work out

I did not make this goal.  The closest that I came was 139.6 on 3/22.  But, I totally dropped the ball on my regular workouts.  For the first 3 weeks of the month I legitimately tracked the food that I ate for each day.  And, I wasn’t doing too bad at staying right around 1,250 calories a day.  But then I didn’t hit the 3 workout goal.  I had intended to do 4 during Spring Break week to sort of make up for it, but I didn’t.  And then, I did something to my neck/shoulder/back and got out of the routine.    I completed 10 workouts for the month when I should have done 12+.  This always happens to me.  I do really well for 2-3 months and then I just get tired of the effort and I give up.  But, this time I want to be different.  I want to re-commit for the months of April and May.  Plus, I do have a goal in mind: vacation in late May.

137 lbs. by May 1/ Re-Commit to 3 Workouts per week

This is a reachable goal– it’s 3.2 lbs in 3.5 weeks; I can do it!

  • Drink more water, 2 cups of coffee a day and 48 ounces of water

Uh, this is not happening.  I have sort of even given up on trying.  I have a cup of coffee immediately when I wake up, another one when I get to work in the morning and then usually one in the afternoon.  I have just decided to live with my 3 cup a day habit.

  • Eat better

This is another one of those goals where I was doing really well and then I dropped the ball.  When we first go grocery shopping our fridge is filled with fresh fruits and veggies and really healthy options for snacks and packed lunches.  And then as the cupboards start to become barren and the crisper drawer is empty my eating habits start to take a turn for the worse!  I start buying candy for snacks at work and just putting whatever/whenever into my mouth.  I need to get back on track with this one.

  • 5,000 points on Vitality by April 1

I made this goal!  I hit 5,137 at the end of March.  I am halfway to my overall goal of 10,000 points and we are at the start of month 4 so I am tracking to meet my goal.  They give you points for things like dental check-ups, too and I have one coming up in May so I am where I need to be for this one.

5,500 points by May 1

Finances

  • Student Loans.

I just made my payment for student loans this week.  I have another student loan payment to make at the end of this month.  Next month, May, will be the last month that I make my “extra big” payments.  Then, I will go back to paying slightly more than the minimum due and adding in more whenever I can.

  • Retirement savings.

I did it!  I finally rolled over my previous 401(k) into my existing one!  It feels good to have combined them and to see the total slowly growing.  I’m not going to retire a millionaire but at least this gives me hope that I can actually retire one day.  Currently, I am contributing 12% to my 401(k) and my employer matches 6%.  I should do some research into whether I am making a wise choice or if I could make my money work better in a different way.  I shall consult Dave Ramsey and Suze Orman.

  • Savings.

This is another area where I am seeing the fruits of my labor!  I am trying to build up my emergency fund and also save for a down payment on my next car.  And, depending on what makes financial sense I may use some of this money to blast away at my student loans.  These are all things that I need to research, but right now I have 10% of my income automatically funneled into my savings and when I find myself with a bit of extra money at the end of the month, I spend some and save some.

Misc.

  • I did not read a book during the month of March.  I picked one and started it but I didn’t put in the time or effort of reading it.  I have back-burnered the book for now and have started a book by Candace Bushnell called Killing Monica that I got for my birthday.
  • Travel– It’s looking like the trip to Cali is going to happen.  We have narrowed it down to the Santa Monica pier area with trips to Universal Studios and Griffith Park and Observatory.  Are there any must-see/must-do’s in that area that you can recommend?  I’d love to hear them.  My husband and I have both secured the time off from work–now we just need to book flights and hotel.

There it is.  My month of March.  Some great progress in the area of finances, travel plans, and student loan debt but some set-backs in reading, working out and losing weight.  I know what I need to focus on for April.  What do you want to focus on for April?  Let me know in the comments below and we’ll meet back here in May to discuss.

February Done

The New Year always seems so fresh and so new but then the excitement starts to wear off.  February is such a short, little, quick month that it seems like it ends before you even know it!  But, let’s check in on my month of February.

Health and Well-Being

  • 138 lbs. by March 1/ Work out

I have done a great job with working out regularly!  For the last 9 weeks I have successfully completed 3 workouts.  I am extremely proud of myself for meeting this goal.  But, the best weigh-in that I’ve had has been 141.6–3.6 lbs. away from my goal.  The goal is for 137 lbs. by April 1.  That’s 4.6 pounds which is totally doable!

  • Drink more water, 2 cups of coffee a day and 48 ounces of water

I’m still not doing very good with this one.  I’m trying to drink more water and I’m starting to get there– one bottle at a time.  I have to keep working on this and I’m hoping with the warmer weather that drinking cold water will be easier.

  • Eat better

Because I haven’t made my weight loss goals I have started to count my calories.  My goal is about 1,200 calories each day–regardless of whether it’s a work out day or not.  I am hoping that this is going to get me on track!  I have a sweet tooth and I like to indulge in food so I have to start reeling it back.

  • Reach platinum level on Vitality (10,000 points)

I totally hit this goal out of the park!  At the end of February, I had reached 4,318 points.  I am going to keep pushing forward and hope to hit 5,000 points by the end of March.

Finances

  • Student Loans.

Hopefully with the extra that I have been paying I can get the total down to 24,500 after my payments for the month of March.

  • Retirement savings.

I took the steps to have my old 401(k) closed and the check sent to me so that I can forward it to my current 401(k) provider.  I sent it to them but I filled the paper out incorrectly because they sent it back to me to correct.  I want to take care of this by the end of March.

  • Savings.

I am working on putting money in to my savings but I know that there are going to be a few upcoming things where I will use some of that money.  But, that’s O.K. it’s all part of the plan.

Misc.

  • I read a book in January called Only the Truth by Adam Croft.  I enjoyed the book but I did feel like the writer spent a lot of time developing the characters and the plot and then it seemed like the ending was rushed—almost like he was forced to just end it because of a publisher’s deadline.  I just downloaded and started a nonfiction book today.
  • Travel– I’m still working on the details of the trips to Cali and to Columbus but I hope that everything pans out as planned.

There you have it!  How are you doing with your goals?  Please sound off in the comments below.
