You might have noticed that I’ve been a little remiss in updating my fireplace mantle.  I usually change it every few months to coincide with the season or the holidays.  But, my Spring/Easter decor has been up since the middle of April.  What’s even worse is that I grabbed the red, white, and blue decorations out of the storage tub when I got out the Easter decorations so that it would be easy to change out for Memorial Day in May.  But, that didn’t exactly happen.  I don’t have any Summer themed decorations so I generally shift to patriotic for the Summer months since it can cover Memorial Day in May, 4th of July, and stretch all the way to Labor Day in September.

Well, I finally got around to switching it over this past Wednesday.  And, I must have really been feeling the red, white, and blue vibe because it snuck into my outfit, too.

I started with these ankle length khaki pants.  They were lightweight enough to wear while running errands in the 90 degree weather.  I added this tunic length navy blouse with white polka dots.  Then, I added my gold watch, gold stud earrings, and strappy sandals.  I would have worn red ballet flats but I just finished painting my toenails and I didn’t want to smudge them.  Lastly, I went with simple eye makeup and a bold red lip.

Happy Flag Day!

Hello!  I know I say this all the time, but I’m sorry that I ghosted for the last 2 weeks.  After the semester ended I took a break from composing outfits and just threw on whatever.  And, “whatever” doesn’t usually make for good blog material.  And then I got busy with getting ready to go on vacation.  Sunday of this week my husband and I returned from a lovely vacation in Santa Monica, California.

I had never been to California and it was wonderful.  A very laid back and carefree vacation.  We rented bikes for the week and spent a lot of time taking in the scenery of the beach and the pier from our bicycle.  Monday was Memorial Day and gave us a nice day to unpack, do some laundry, and pick up the house keys from my Mom who kept an eye on the apartment, got the mail, and fed the cat.  Tuesday was back to work.

I decided to pair this silky sleeveless blouse with a pair of dark wash skinny jeans.  Although the forecast was predicting high’s in the 70’s I work in an air-conditioned office so I needed a layer for warmth and modesty.  I had lots of choices for cardigans: red boyfriend, red normal, red short-sleeved, navy boyfriend, royal blue short-sleeved, grey, white short-sleeved, etc.  But, I kept it basic and went with a three-quarter length sleeve black cardigan.  I felt that this tied in the black ballet flats nicely.  Although I wouldn’t have minded going in a different direction with my jewelry I went simple and basic and wore my silver hoops and silver watch.  A basic brown eye and red lip sufficed for my makeup.  I wanted to wear a different red lipstick but I was starting to run out of time so I went with this glossy balm that’s a lot less fussy!

There you have it!  My back to work, back to blogging, back to reality outfit.

This week I’ve worn a lot of blue!  I wasn’t that conscious of it until I sat down to write this post and was brainstorming a title.  I have noticed that sometimes I tend to gravitate towards certain colors and I’ll wear a lot of green one week and a lot of pink the next.  That’s the one thing that I like about pre-planning my outfits and keeping this blog.  It pushes me to be creative and to notice those patterns that can quickly become ruts.

Although, I will admit that for the past week or two I haven’t been planning my outfits.  Class just wrapped up on Monday evening with the final exam and it’s pretty normal for me to do a casual outfit or two on the last few days of class.  This particular Monday I just wore the same outfit that I wore to work that morning.

Monday’s outfit is loosely based on this outfit that Reese Witherspoon was photographed wearing.  It’s pretty basic and easy to copy– medium wash skinny jeans and a blue sweater layered over a button-down.  I had a v-neck navy blue sweater and a blue gingham top so that’s what I went with.  It was a tad chilly on Monday so I opted to go with my suede booties and blue argyle socks.  Because I wore my booties I did a large cuff on my jeans instead of a small roll.  I still cuffed the shirtsleeves over the sweater and let the collar peek out.  And, just like Reese I kept the accessories to a minimum.  I do have to admit, I wish my hair looked as good as hers in the picture.  I didn’t wash my hair that morning– instead I just sprayed it with dry shampoo and pulled it back into a messy bun.

Tuesday my blue came from a striped t-shirt that I paired with olive-green pants and a denim jacket.  I thought that I had done that combination before but when I looked back in my archives I didn’t have any pictures of it, so I guess not.  (Screenshot or it doesn’t exist, amiright?)

This is a great casual and comfortable outfit that doesn’t look boring to me.  I think that the colored pants give it that bit of interest and intrigue.  Again, this is an easy outfit to copy– I think most women have some sort of striped or patterned shirt in their closet, a pair of khakis/chinos, and a denim jacket or some other layering/completer piece that could be used.

Oh, and I do like my hair in these pictures.  I went home Monday after work and washed my hair before class that evening.  So, I didn’t need to wash it on Tuesday morning.  I just quickly smoothed it out with the flat-iron and then I pulled back pieces on the side.  Normally, I just pull them back and secure them with a clear elastic so that they create a poof at the crown.  But, this time I got a bit fancy and braided the pieces.  LOL, it’s the small things.

What do you think– are you going to try to re-create either of these outfits for yourself?  I suggest that you do.
